Trip to Duffield 4th April 2009 With 8 of us departing on the 10.29 from Hinckley rail station, joining the two who joined at Nuneaton and another two at Narborough – our group of 12 stood on Leicester station awaiting our connection to Derby. Discussion mainly revolving around the pricing structure for our tickets, because we were assured of a good day out many of us having experienced similar events over the years. It was good to see some new faces and some unsure of what lay ahead. Following the connection at Derby we soon arrived at Duffield. After a short walk we were at The King William IV at Milford (not in my 2008 copy of the good beer guide so perhaps a new entry). Here we were greeted with T.T. Landlord and Batemans GHA along with Marstons Pedigree and Greene King Old Speckled Hen – Most of us tried the GHA and jolly nice it was too. I was not on my own to notice that not only would the next guest beers include brews from Kelham Island, Hidden, Cathedral and Hall & Woodhouse but we had missed out on the pubs beer festival by a couple of weeks. Another leg stretch and we were at The Holly Bush Inn at Makeney which has got to be a must to visit if you are anywhere in the area. Here we found Abbot, Fullers, Titanic, Timothy Taylor, Moorland and my favourite of the moment Abbeydale Absolution. I had to savour the pork pie at £1.00 to give me strength for yet another pint!! From there a scenic walk over to Holbrook found us at the Dead Poets Inn (not to be confused with similarly strangely named establishments) where T.T. Landlord was again guesting but this time alongside Harvestoun, Wells and Young, Quartz, Theakstons and Acorn. Another gem of a pub and good conversation to be had with the locals – cheers Chum! By now decidedly wobbly we located a bus stop nearby and off to Derby we went. As time was short and most of the group had not as yet experienced a visit, we stopped off at the Olde Dolphin Inne, Derby’s “oldest surviving pub”. Here among beers not already sampled on our day’s travels we had available – Lymestone, Wincle, Tunnel and Tollgate. If anybody could fault any of the pubs visited (which I doubt) they certainly could not fault the variety of beers available which had something to offer for every palate. Defiantly no “DUFF” beer to be had at any of these!! Here’s to the next one. CHRIS. Photos by Chris &
