7th Hinckley Beer Festival

11-13 September 2014

Although the bars opened at midday on the Thursday, the official opening was at 5pm, performed by Branch Member Jeff Bannister who is this year's Mayor of Hinckley & Bosworth.

Following the opening licensees of our Good Beer Guide pubs were presented with their information packs and guides. Six of our seven entries were able to attend, unfortunately Simon Clough from the Rising Sun, Shackerstone was missing.
The presentations were made by Jeff Bannister, Mayor of Hinckley & Bosworth.

There was also a presentation made to Phil & Dawn from the Queens Head, Hinckley in recognition of their second place in the East Midlands Pub of the Year, Leicestershire, Rutland & Northants section. Details

The Festival opened with 73 real ales and 22 ciders/perries. Our Hinckley brewery, Elliswood, had their own section of bar with five of their beers on offer.

We had around 1800 visitors during the three days, with Friday night being the most crowded with over 500 in at one time. The fastest selling beer was undoubtedly Raw's Grey Ghost a 5.9% IPA which was not ready until Friday and was gone well before we closed.

The live music in the marquee proved popular with a local band, The Press, on Friday night and a Leicester group, Weird Fish, on Saturday.

The Champion Beer of the Festival, as voted by visitors, was Elliswood's Jolly Jack Tar, well done to Tracy! The Champion Beer of the Festival Award was presented to Tracy & Phil, from Elliswood Brewery, by Chris James, Festival Organiser, at our October Monthly Meeting.

We had sponsors for all the beers and some of the ciders. We are, as always, very grateful for the response we get to this scheme from local businesses and individuals. The full list can be viewed here

On the Thursday afternoon we were given the responsibility of judging the East Midlands Best Bitter. A team of six were assembled and they took their job very seriously. The outcome was: Gold - Blue Monkey's Sanctuary at 4.1%, Silver - Brewster's Hop a Doodle Doo at 4.3% and Bronze - Barlow's Betty's Blonde at 4%

Generous visitors, who donated their excess tokens to our chosen charity, raised £310.50. This will go to Westfield Community Centre.

During the Festival our 500th member signed up - Ellie Jordan from Barwell.

Our thanks to everyone who helped in any way to make this Festival a great success and, of course, to everyone who came and helped drink the beers and ciders. We hope to see you all again next year when the 8th Hinckley CAMRA Beer Festival will be held on 10, 11 & 12 September 2015.
